Ah, summer. Despite the weather, summer is here and it is time for healing rest. We have had a busy and lively year together in ministry and the summer is a welcome time to draw back from constant activity to think about where we have come and where we might go from here. We are so richly blessed. May we practice gratitude and generosity as we prepare our hearts for the new thing that we are to become in Christ. One thing we know if we are paying attention is that nothing stays the same with one exception—the love of God in Christ for us. As Christians we celebrate the great tradition from which we have come and we participate in the new creation that is promised in Christ. It is a challenge to honor the past even as we create the future. What do we keep? What do we leave behind? What is God calling his people to do and to be in this new day. Make no mistake, the Church is in transition. Always we are going on to perfection. We are not yet finished. We are changing to become more and more the people God is calling us to be. We here in Belmont have an exciting opportunity to remake ourselves, to discern together just what is our mission in this place and time. I invite you in the midst of your summer meditations to remember your Church, to pray for us, to dream dreams, to help us envision our life together in all the days before us so that when we gather again in the fall to do the work of the Church we will come with excitement and anticipation for all the good we might do in Christ's name. Come and join us for worship if you are around and be glad for the joy and peace that is summer, a holy time of blessing and recreation and rest.
One of the wonderful things about summer is the opportunity to worship every week with our friends at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Watertown. Just in case you’ve forgotten the schedule, here it is again:
- July 5th at St. Johns
- July 12th here
- July 19th at St. Johns
- July 26th here
- August 2nd at St. Johns
- August 9th here
- August 16th at St. Johns
- August 23rd here
- August 30th at St. Johns
All services, whether they’re at BUMC or St. John’s, are at 10:00 a.m., with the opportunity for fellowship and refreshments afterward. St. John’s is at 80 Mt. Auburn St. in Watertown, just east of Watertown Square. In past years, St. John’s has graciously hosted a lunch the last Sunday of the summer, complete with salad bar. Rumor has it that this year the salad bar will be replaced with an ice cream bar…another wonderful thing about summer!
will continue throughout July and August, at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel. Everyone is welcome to be a part of this restful interlude during the week.
The Missions Committee at St. John’s is launching its first-ever Social Justice Movie Night/Pizza Party.
They will be showing Lost In Woonsocket, a documentary focused on two men and their struggle for sobriety and redemption. Pizza, salad, and refreshments will be served. The event and dinner are free. Everyone in our extended summer family (St. John’s UMC and Belmont UMC) is encouraged to attend. Invite a friend or family member too!
Sunday, July 12th 2009 at 6:00PM
Neither the Coffee Circle
nor the Women’s Book Group
will meet this summer, but the Book Group will be reading Prayers for Sale by Sandra Dallas in preparation for their next meeting on September 24th.
As for committee meetings, so far the following committees are NOT planning on having meetings in July or August: Church Council, Finance, Missions, E-Team, and Education. That’s not to say that work won’t be happening! And if any committees do meet during the summer months, rest assured we will notify the appropriate committee members. Of course you can always check the online calendar, which is updated frequently – go to our website at www.umcbelmont.org and click on the calendar button at the top.
At the June Annual Meeting, new committee members were elected to serve in a variety of areas. You’ll hear more about that as we get closer to the fall, but in the meantime, we’d like to recognize and thank those people whose terms of service ended June 30th:
- Diane Gore: 6 years as Chair of the Trustees
- Morrie Bailey: 3 years as Chair of the Staff Parish Relations Committee
- From the Church Council: Catherine Grimm, EJ Johnson, and Lisa Courtney
- From the Trustees: Linda Keltner
- From SPRC: Jocelyn Milton, Phillip Imboywa, and Steve Courtney
- From Nominations: E.J. Johnson
Several of us will be focusing over the summer on the creation of new fellowship groups. If you have any ideas or suggestions about new groups, or about any of the church programs, please feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thank you for Your Support
RIM - Ida Jiolo, client of the Belmont/Arlington Cluster, The RIM cluster is supporting Ida’s use of Imler House for a year while the children go to school and adjust to life here. The children have visited Wellington Elementary School, Chenery Middle School, and Belmont High School. Thanks to people who have donated various items to furnishing Imler House for the family.
PARTAKERS PRISON MINISTRY - Laurel Wainwright and Linda Kincaid are in touch with Yavette, who is continuing BU classes. She has been accepted into the BU culinary arts program. Face-to-face contact is a good source of support for Yavette. Please consider being one of our contacts with Yavette. She needs our emotional support as much as she needs our financial support. Talk to Laurel or Linda about how to help.
Scholarship for Ashley – Andrea Griffin’s daughter Ashley is a high school senior at a private Catholic school. We have been helping her with a scholarship so she can continue her studies. Andrea was our nursery school care giver during services for several years until she became too sick to continue. Please contribute to Ashley’s continued education by writing a check or making a cash donation to BUMC and designating it to Ashley’s Scholarship. Thank you for considering this mission.
Food Pantry - The food pantry continues to distribute food during the summer.
Please remember to drop donations in the Narthex cart.
Here are some missions you can perform at home during your daily routine:
Do you use a computer? Go to www.freerice.com – There you can practice vocabulary, math, geography…. And more. At the same time you are feeding the poor through the United Nations World Food Program. Take a look and explore the web site.
Shopping at Amazon? Go to www.belmontumc.org – (our website) and link to Amazon from the Amazon icon. The church receives a percentage of sales when you link through our site.
Missions through the New England Conference – June 2009
Peace With Justice Sunday – June 7, 2009 – (first Sunday after Pentecost) Thank you to all the people who donated the Peace With Justice cause.
AIDS Collection – June 14, 2009 – (A Special campaign by New England Conference) Thank you to everyone who supported the AIDS drive by the Annual Conference.
Please Help With Missions
BUMC encourages our members to participate in mission.
